1.0  MEMBERSHIP OF THE INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATION 

1.1 GENERAL

Membership of our Institute can be gained only by passing the institute’s professional membership qualifying examination the ACIA and fulfilling the practical experience requirement. There are three grades of membership with corresponding designatory letters to use after the member’s name as follows: Associate (ACIA), Member (MCIA) and Fellow (FCIA). Each applicant must provide evidence of the required period of practical experience as described below; be considered by the council to be fit and proper person to be so elected; and be recommended either by a member of the institute or by a person of professional standing who has known the applicant for at least one year, as regards his character and suitability for membership.

1.2 Associates (ACIA)

For election as an associate of the institute, an applicant must be at least 21 years of age and have had not less than three years relevant professional working experience.

1.3 Full Members (MCIA) 

An applicant for election to this grade must be at least 25 years of age and have had not less than six years relevant professional working experience, three of which must be in a senior appointment.  

1.4 Fellows (FCIA)

Fellowship is the highest grade of membership. Most applicants will have been associates and members for a time before applying for this grade but this is not always essential. A successful applicant must be at least 30 years of age and have had not less than ten years relevant professional working experience, three of which must be in a senior executive or administrative appointment in a substantial organization.

1.5  Examinations

Experts today forecast that only multi skilled professionals will be relevant to the needs of new management styles in the new millennium. This has been the vision of Chartered Institute of Administration right from its inception.

The Chartered Institute’s professional examination scheme, which has always been based on a multi-disciplinary syllabi, is drawn to keep pace with the latest developments in professional administration techniques, make members more versatile and more relevant to the changing complexities of business practices in the new millennium as well as to reinforce the Chartered Institute’s expertise in the wide area of professional practice bestowed on the institute by its enabling Act. The scheme comprises:

            (a)   Diploma in Business Studies (DBS)

            (b)  ACIA Professional Qualification

N.B: The main Examinations of the Institute hold every June and December each year. In a case where referrals examinations are to be conducted, a special date is usually fixed and communicated to the students.

2.0 DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS STUDIES (DBS)

  2.1 Objectives

This programme which is the Administrative Management Course (AMC) of the Chartered Institute of Administration provides a recognized qualification for:  

(a)        Persons who may not possess the entry requirement for ACIA Professional course to have the opportunity of progressing towards direct entry to intermediate level of the ACIA programme;

(b)        Middle-level administrative officers, at non-professional level, in the functional areas of office management, Accounting, Personnel management, marketing, purchasing/stores administration in public and commercial organization.

(c)        Degree foundation for direct entry through JAMB, to 200-level of the universities or the HND of Polytechnics/Monotechnic in relevant disciplines.  

2.2 Duration

Duration is a minimum of two academic years where no exemptions are granted.

2.3 Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for admission to Diploma in Business Studies Course is the GCE O’Level or its equivalent, with credits in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and Economics obtained at not more than two sittings.  

A mature person (aged 21 and above) who does not have the required number of credit passes can be offered a provisional admission, subject to the condition that he/she must make up his/her entry deficiencies within one year of commencing the Diploma Course. In addition, he/she may be required to submit a letter of recommendation from his/her employer or the principal of his college.  

2.4 Exemptions

Exemptions on subject-for-subject basis may be granted to persons with recognized qualifications of suitable standards which indicate sufficient coverage of Diploma in Business Studies syllabus.  

2.5 Course Structure

The course structure comprises: parts 1-3 Examination subjects; Research project and Entrepreneurial workshop, all which are compulsory.  

2.6 Method Of Study

This course is available on full time, part time (weekends) and distance studies through the institute’s accredited study centres.  

2.7 Examination Regulations

The parts 1, 2 and 3 examinations must be completed strictly in that sequence. All the subjects of a part must be taken together at a sitting, except where exempted or where referrals are held. Each subject is examined by a question paper of 3 hours. The minimum score required to pass a subject is 50%. Credits gained successfully in the parts 1 and 2 papers can be retained to prevent unnecessary retaking of examinations in these two levels. All the subject of part 3 must be passed in a maximum of two courses in two sittings; otherwise all the papers must be retaken.

3.0 ACIA PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE  

3.1 Objectives

The objectives of the ACIA Examination are to:

(a)       Provide for the institute, together with practical experience requirements, an adequate basis for assuring the society that those admitted to membership are competent to act as chartered Administrators for entities, whether in manufacturing, commercials or service organizations, in public or private sectors of the economy.

(b)       Enable the institute to examine whether prospective members have an adequate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the stated body of knowledge, and skills.

(c)        Complement the institute’s practical experience requirements.

3.2 Course Structure

The revised course structure comprises five main components made up of:

(a)        Examination courses in three levels, namely: foundation I & II, intermediate I & II and final (professional practice) I, II & III.

(b)        Two non-examination but assessed courses, namely: Research Project; Entrepreneurship and Management Consultancy Workshops.

 All courses are compulsory to all candidates, excluding any exemptions granted. 

3.3 Entry Requirements

Any one of the following educational certificates will be accepted:

1.         A degree of a recognized University.

2.         The final Examination Certificate of a recognized Professional body.

3.         Diploma in Business Studies of Chartered Institute of Administration .

4.         The Higher National Diploma of NBTE-accredited Institution.  

3.4 Exemptions (ACIA)

Exemptions on subject-for-subject basis on the foundation and intermediate levels may be granted at the discretion of the council to holders of qualifications which indicate sufficient coverage of the institute’s syllabus (Business related disciplines). No exemption is granted from any subject of final level (Professional Practice).

3.5 Duration

The minimum duration required to complete the whole of the professional examination, where no exemption is granted is two years. However, it is possible to complete the examination in as little as one year if total exemptions are granted from the whole of foundation and intermediate levels, with the outstanding papers passed at consecutive examinations sessions.

3.6 Method Of Study

This course is available in full time, part time (weekends) and distance studies through the institute’s accredited study centres.

3.7 Examinations Regulations

1.         The Foundation Level, intermediate and final levels (pp1, pp2, pp3) must be taken separately and strictly in that sequence. Each subject is examined by a three hour paper.

2.         Except where exempted, or where referral are held, all subjects within a level or pp component must be taken together at one sitting.

3.         All subject of a level or pp must be passed before attempting the subjects of the next level or pp.

4.         Credits gained successfully in the foundation and intermediate level papers can be retained, to prevent unnecessary re-taking of examinations in these two level.  

5.         All the subjects of a pp component of the final level must be passed in a maximum of two consecutive sittings; otherwise all the papers must be re-taken.

6.         The pass mark for all papers is 50%.
